Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Universal Message for the World

  • There is one unique Waheguru (God), the Supreme Being.
  • Waheguru is all Truth, the Creator, devoid of fear, animosity and hatred, Immortal, Everlasting, Unborn, Self-Existent, Benevolent Enlightener.
  • Waheguru (God) was the Truth, is the Truth and forever shall be the Truth.
  • Human being may reflect certain godly qualities but cannot be regarded as incarnation of Waheguru (God), for Waheguru (God) is outside the cycle of birth and death.
  • Waheguru (God) has many names, known differently in all religions and languages.
  • Different religions show their own unique paths, but they all lead to the same One Supreme Being.
  • No one religion can lay claim to have monopoly over Waheguru (God).
  • Deeds determine salvation and not membership of any religion, birthright, class or status.
  • Persons faith must be respected. (Guru Nanak Ji had a Muslim and a Hindu accompanying him throughout his many travels when spreading his message; Sri Guru Granth Sahib includes holy verses by Muslim and Hindu Mystics).
  • Forceful conversion into any faith is an evil deed.
  • Every person has a right to freely think, freely speak and freely pursue a faith of his choice. (In 1675, Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, 9th Sikh Guru gave his life for another faith in order to protect this principle)
  • Women have equal status as men and should not be treated as inferior (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, says that women, who give birth to kings and mystics cannot be treated as inferior.
  • Despite having comfort, luxury and prosperity, there is no contentment without spiritual and moral foundation.
  • Human life form is a precious opportunity that will go to waste, if it is squandered away in false egocentric attachment with materialism.
  • All men are equal and have equal rights, regardless of their status, religion, colour or sex.

To encourage and promote equality and humility and to eradicate man made distinctions due to class, caste, colour and sex Guru Nanak Dev Ji introduced:

  • Meeting together as Sangat (congregation) - to attain spiritual food for the mind, through sitting, praying and meditating collectively.
  • Join in Pangat (sitting together for community meal) to have Guru ka Langar - sacred free vegetarian meal prepared by selfless volunteers in the community kitchen)
  • Should pray regularly and the prayers must be for the good of all living.
  • Must work and earn honestly.
  • Must share at least a tenth of honest earnings with the less fortunate and with religious institutions (focal points for activities to help the needy).
  • Waheguru Ji (God) must be remembered at all times.
  • Must be true in thought, words and deeds.
  • Should not fear anybody and nor bring fear to anybody.
  • Must judge a person on his deeds and not by his status, class or birth.
  • Must be kind, true and humble.
  • Should give up greed, anger and pride.
  • Should not speak ill of others and nor should you hear ill of others.
  • Should reject monasticism and seek salvation while continuing to lead a normal life.
  • Must reject rituals, superstitions, omens, incantations and amulets.
